Judge blocks release of Tucson shooter's mug shots (Reuters)

PHOENIX (Reuters) – A federal judge has ordered a temporary stay on the release of federal "mug shots" of accused Tucson shooter Jared Lee Loughner, after his attorneys argued releasing them would be tantamount to trying him in the media.

In a ruling announced on Friday District Judge Larry Burns stayed the release of U.S. Marshals Service booking photographs of Loughner, 22, pending a court hearing on February 18.

Loughner is charged with the attempted assassination of U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords and attempting to murder two of her aides in a January 8 shooting rampage outside a Tucson supermarket that killed six people and injured 13.

The order follows an emergency motion lodged by Loughner's attorneys on Thursday, arguing that mug shots are "powerfully associated with criminality."

"Release of the photograph conflicts with the parties' interests in avoiding the case being tried in the media rather than in court," defense attorney Reuben Camper Cahn argued.

He added that mug shots are "inherently private," and "reveal what individuals look like at their most humiliated moment," and argued that their release served no relevant freedom of information interest.

The photograph of Loughner so far released to the media was taken by the Pima County Sheriff's Department after his arrest.

The U.S. Marshals Service mug shots that his attorneys sought to block were taken after he was subsequently booked into federal custody.

Further federal charges are expected to be brought against Loughner, after which he could face prosecution for an array of state crimes.

Best Buy Thunderbolt, Xoom Release Dates Posted 'In Error' - PC Magazine

Best Buy on Friday said its Grand Rapids, Mich. store mistakenly posted release date information about the HTC Thunderbolt and the Motorola Xoom on its Facebook page.

"The info from the Grand Rapids store was posted in error, as the details included are not yet finalized," Best Buy said in a statement. "We will share updated and accurate information when we have it."

The post has since been deleted.

On Thursday evening, the Michigan store added a message to its Facebook page (click below for larger image) that said the retailer will start selling the HTC Thunderbolt from Verizon on February 14 and the Motorola Xoom tablet starting February 24.

"Here are the release dates for new phones & devices that are coming soon to Best Buy," the store said in a post that also said it would have the Verizon iPhone 4 on February 10 and the Samsung Presto hotspot on February 17.

The Facebook page did not unveil pricing for the Thunderbolt or the Xoom.

Both devices made their debut at this year's CES. The HTC Thunderbolt is one of 10 Verizon 4G devices the provider unveiled at the show, while the Motorola Xoom is an Android Honeycomb-based tablet that PCMag named the best tablet of CES.

The Xoom boats a dual-core 1-GHz processor, 1080p HD video playback, and 3G upgradable to 4G. It will run on Android 3.0 Honeycomb and use Adobe Flash Player. The Xoom will also have a five-megapixel rear-facing camera and a two-megapixel front-facing camera. A recent Motorola Xoom teaser video took a shot at Apple, by saying that "2011 Looks a lot like 1984. One Authority. One design. One way to work. It's time for more choices."

The HTC Thunderbolt, meanwhile, will be exclusive to Verizon, and includes a 4.3-inch WVGA display, an 8-megapixel camera, HD video recording, and wireless DLNA capability. It runs a 1-GHz Snapdragon processor and includes HTC Sense 2.0.

When asked, Verizon said that Best Buy determines its own product release dates. A Motorola spokeswoman said the company has not announced pricing and availability for the Xoom.
