SEOUL, South Korea – Police are investigating who broke into an Indonesian official's hotel room in Seoul amid media reports that South Korean spies tried to steal confidential documents about a possible arms deal.
The Chosun Ilbo newspaper reported Monday that the intruders were South Korean intelligence officers trying to steal information on Indonesia's strategy on negotiations over Seoul's push to sell weapons.
South Korean and Indonesian government officials denied the report.
Police officer Shin Seong-chul said three people broke into the room Wednesday but fled after an Indonesian official returned.
He said police would continue their investigation based on CCTV footage obtained from the hotel and other materials he didn't identify.
